The
media industry has exploded in recent years. Film, television,
music industry, internet and video game markets are bigger today
than ever before. Creating a healthy need for technical audio
professionals all over the world and in many niche fields. Every
time you pop in a DVD, listen to the radio, go to a live show or
play a new Xbox game, a sound engineer was responsible for the
audio. Creative, experienced people are in great demand these
days, and with the right guidance embarking on an exciting
career in the audio industry is a serious possibility for many
enthusiasts. The Cape Audio College has 16 years experience in
the training of sound engineers, many of our students have
become well known industry professionals locally and
internationally. Our name is synonymous with leading industry
professionals as the best audio training facility in the
country. We are proud of this reputation and strive to continue
training the best engineers available in a constantly evolving
industry.
The Cape Audio College utilizes state of
the art teaching techniques in preparing
students for a career in the competitive
sound industry.
The college has thirty seven
fully equipped, world class multi-track recording studios,
mix-down areas, digital and analogue
editing suites and other practical work
areas. You will be taught by lecturers
who are professionals, actively involved
in the music and audio industries. In
addition, leading engineers and
technical personnel are invited as guest
lecturers giving our students valuable
practical tips. Sound engineering is not
something that can be learned from books
alone, which is why we place so much
emphasis on practical work. There is
little point in undertaking a diploma in
sound engineering if you end up with a good
knowledge of theory, but have not had enough experience to be
employable. We want you not only to be an excellent engineer but
also an employable one, because when you’re successful, we’re
successful.
Students are given practical
real world assignments that are assessed on creative and
technical levels. These assignments are designed to give the
student a solid
understanding in all of the main fields
of sound engineering. The first years practical
syllabus covers Radio advert production, Audio visual post
production, Recording studio design, live sound and music
production. Students are also encouraged to work on personal
projects and are required to record mix and master a live band
recording as their final "end of year" assignment. The theory
element is designed to give you a broad understanding of audio
procedures and technical workings. Understanding is the key
to
effective engineering so one to one in studio training helps
students apply the theory they have learned in a control room
situation. The Cape Audio College campus is situated in
the sunny suburb of Mowbray in the Waverly business park,
literally a 2 min walk from the train station, 5 min drive
from the University of Cape Town and 10 min from the
centre of
Cape Town. We are also walking distance from Cape Town's
un-official art district, Observatory. This location is teeming
with like minded creative people, which makes involvement in the
local music and creative communities extremely accessible.
There is a very well priced restaurant on campus and a tuck shop
for cool drinks and chips. Every workstation is equipped with
broadband internet and there is an audio and contacts library
available at reception.

Being involved in
the Cape Audio College community is very important for the
developing
engineer. Students are strongly
encouraged to get as involved as
possible with outside college events. We
often place students in working
situations around Cape Town as part of
their development and live events are
almost entirely student run. This
encouragement alone has placed students
in very respected career positions on
post graduation. College lecturers are
industry professionals and from time to
time do commercial projects with well
know artist. Students are encouraged to
get involved as assistants in these
situations, gaining them valuable real
world experience. We see our students as
members of a family, the Cape Audio
family. We support our graduates and
assist in as many ways as possible when
it comes to job seeking time. We have
been know to place engineers in jobs
around Cape Town and are constantly
communicating with the professional
audio community to ensure that our
students are exposed to as many
opportunities as possible. This
infrastructure has been developed over
years to give our graduates an advantage when beginning
