The first day of the CTEMF (Cape Town Electronic Music Festival), workshop held at Red Bull studios, was primarily focused on the music industry. First on the coach was Hilton “Roach” Roth (African Dope / Gigham), Hagar Graiser (Jump Media / Cape MIC) and Maximillian Kaizen (Creative Commons South Africa). Having the opportunity to have 3 such knowledgeable and open speakers covering topic’s from publishing, performance rights, music copy right and creative commons opened up great debates and dialogue. With a close spotlight on SAMRO which is South Africa’s only music royalties collection agency, the artists and students had their say, with some negative and positive results beings discussed and analyzed by the 3 experts. There is a common misconception that an Audio Engineer primarily works in a recording studio with a band. Many think that there is very little scope when it comes to job opportunities and areas of exploration. Nothing could be further from the truth. The Audio Engineering world covers a vast array of industries and places audio professionals in a multitude of unexpected positions. Think about it. Every time you hear something come out of a speaker, a number of audio professions where more than likely involved. That is why it is so important for us as an audio training institution to expose our students to as many of those possibilities as we can. To move them away from this preconceived notion that success only comes in the form of a gold record. And a sustainable career is often found in other areas of the sound industry other than music production. Read more »
