The pleasure of working with Cape Audio College is the fact that we often get to meet with the past graduates and see what they’ve been up to. One of the students who have been particularly active in the film industry is one of our past graduates, Katinka Janse Van Rensburg. We recently met up with her to find out what she’s been up to and this what she had to say:
“At the end of 2015 I graduated at Cape Audio College with a Diploma in Sound Technology and Production. In January 2016 I volunteered as a PA on Bachelor Finland Season 1 which was shot in Wilderness and some other parts on the Garden Route. I then ended up working in the production department till the end of 2016. Two of the shows we shot that year was a Canadian show called Bait Ball that was shot in Port St Johns and Bachelor Finland Season 2, shot in Knysna. For both productions my role was Production Coordinator.
By the end of 2016 I was very much over all the admin and really wanted to get into the sound side of things. January 2017 the Producer for who I worked with the previous year got me on sound on a German documentary called Mohammad’s Heir. Thereafter I signed up with the Film Africa Trainee program. I can definitely recommend the trainee program for any graduates wanting to get into the film industry.
As sound trainee I worked on 3 big movies namely Dark Branches (a Norwegian movie), Action Point (Comedy with Johnny Knoxville) and Deep Blue See 2. I have learned a lot and gained so much experience in doing location sound.
After those three movies I felt like I learned what I could and was done with being a trainee. Some jobs I did thereafter includes two Finish reality shows: Mestareiden Mestari and Bachelor Finland Season 3, Behind the Scenes sound for VW commercials, a Dutch reality show called Models In Cape Town, a Nintendo Commercial, Finish short film called No Man’s Land and an episode of a local production, Spyskaart.
At the moment the film industry is very quiet and I keep myself busy making music. I currently play bass guitar for Punk band, Mudslinger, and use to play bass guitar for Thrash Metal band, Junkyard Lipstick before we disbanded in 2016. A vocalist, Sammy, and myself are also busy working on a new project lately with a more chilled vibe.
I am very thankful for everything that I have learned, all the awesome people I have met and the great lecturers and lectures at Cape Audio College. My time at Cape Audio College just proved that the effort you put in, you will get out. Some advice for the CAC student: Spend as much time as possible in studio and learning how to use the gear. Ask the lecturers if you don’t know how something work instead of just ignoring the problem. Try to job shadow at as many places and in different fields as possible. It is very handy to have a bit of CV by the time you leave college!
To anyone who consider studying at Cape Audio College, I can definitely recommend it! If you want to follow a career in sound then Cape Audio College is the right place!”back
